Frequently Asked Questions

What is tanking?

Tanking is one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy a Missouri river. Instead of sitting in a kayak or canoe, you’ll float in a modified galvanized stock tank equipped with comfortable chairs, paddles, and life jackets. The tanks are incredibly stable, making it easy to relax, stretch, stand up, and enjoy the ride.

Is it safe?

Safety is our top priority. Every rental includes U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and paddles, and each guest receives a safety briefing before launching. While river recreation always carries some risk, our tanks are designed to provide a stable and comfortable floating experience.

Can the tanks tip over?

It is extremely difficult to tip one of our tanks during normal use. They are much wider and more stable than a kayak or canoe, which is one of the reasons people love them.

Do the metal tanks get hot?

No. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about tanking.

The tanks are floating in cool river water the entire trip, which keeps the metal cool. The bottom of the tank stays in contact with the water throughout your float.

Can I stand up?

Yes! Unlike a kayak or canoe, you can stand, stretch, and move around inside the tank without constantly worrying about balancing.

How many people fit in one tank?

Our tanks are most comfortable with 2–6 adults, depending on your group and what you bring.

Where are you located?

We operate throughout the Rolla area and partner with local campgrounds and outfitters.

We are not limited to one launch location. After you book your float package and preferred float length, we’ll choose the best river route based on current river conditions and send you your meeting location and launch instructions.

How do I book?

Booking is simple.

  1. Choose your float package on our website.
  2. Select your preferred float length.
  3. Complete your reservation.
  4. We’ll contact you with your launch location, meeting time, and all the details for your trip.

What should I bring?

We recommend bringing:

  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • A cooler (if not included with your package)
  • Towels
  • Water shoes or sandals
  • Sunglasses
  • A waterproof phone case

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that can get wet is best. Swimsuits, athletic clothing, water shoes, or sandals all work well.

What is included?

Each tank rental includes:

  • Life jackets
  • Paddles
  • Safety briefing before launch

Do I need experience?

Not at all.

Most of our guests have never been in a stock tank before. Tanking is designed to be easy, relaxing, and enjoyable for beginners.

Can children come?

Yes! Families are welcome. Children must wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times and should always be supervised by an adult.

Can we bring food and drinks?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. If you choose to bring alcohol, please drink responsibly, follow Missouri laws, and never operate a vehicle after drinking.

What happens if the river is unsafe?

River conditions change throughout the season.

If water levels or weather make a route unsafe, we’ll work with you to reschedule or move your trip to another available route whenever possible.

What if it rains?

Light rain doesn’t always stop a float, but severe weather, flooding, or unsafe river conditions may require rescheduling. Safety always comes first.

Are pets allowed?

Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome if they’re comfortable around water. We recommend a properly fitted dog life jacket for their safety.

How long are the floats?

We offer different float lengths so you can choose the experience that fits your day. Available routes and times vary depending on current river conditions.

Why choose Mid-Missouri Tanking?

Because we’re not just renting floating stock tanks—we’re helping people slow down.

No balancing.
No cramped seating.
No rushing.

Just comfortable chairs, calm water, good company, and a chance to unplug and enjoy one of Missouri’s most beautiful rivers.

Relax. Float. Make memories.
